Uses

MasterSeries MCU is a maintenance primer and finish coating for interior and exterior use over steel and masonry surfaces where a high degree of chemical, abrasion and corrosion resistance is required. This coating is generally used as a primer on steel and galvanized surfaces where only marginal surface preparation can be achieved. It can be used as a primer for enamel, lacquer, and two part epoxys. MasterSeries can be used as a topcoat where gloss retention is not a critical factor, i.e., as an aluminum roof paint. Because it has excellent salt corrosion resistance properties, MasterSeries has been widely used in marine atmospheres. It has found use on steel tanks, stacks, piping, metal building paneling, trucks, railcars, bridges, etc.

MasterSeries is supplied as a one package product to be applied as supplied. THINNING IS NOT RECOMMENDED. IF THINNING IS REQUIRED NOT MORE THAN 10%, THINNING CAN ADVERSELY EFFECT THE CORROSION FIGHTING PROPERTIES OF THIS COATING. USE MCT 101 THINNER OR URETHANE REDUCER.

TEST DATA

Salt spray, 5% (ASTM B117)

3 coats of MasterSeries applied rusty steel with an "x" scribed through the center of plate. After 14,000 hours exposure only slight undercutting at spots along a scribed "x" was noted and this was less then 1/32" undercut. Total film thickness 8.0 mils approximate.

Weatherometer

Cycle consisted of 30 minutes light, 125°F, 30 minutes dark, 80 F, 100% R.H. Panels were prepared as for above salt spray using rusty substrate, after 2000 hours the coating appeared in very good condition with no apparent undercutting along scribed "x".

Outdoor Exposure

Two coats MasterSeries approximately6.0 mils DFT applied to rusty panel and exposed for 5 years showed now signs of lifting of paint film or blistering and no apparent rusting.

Heat Test

2 coats of MasterSeries were applied to sand blasted panels and subjected to 350°F for 15 days. Although slight yellowing occurred, there appeared to be no loss of adhesion or blistering of film.

Solvent Resistance

After curing for 7 days at room temperature, MasterSeries coated panels were subjected to various solvents and found to be extremely resistant. After 30 days exposure there was no failure or noticeable attack by solvents such as xylol, toluol, or other aromatics. Alcohols and glycols showed no attack. Also, ester solvents such as ethyl glycol acetate had no affect. Acetone softened the film after 10 days, although it hardened upon removal. Methylene chloride destroyed the film in two days. Gasoline diesel fuel and JP.4 jet fuel had no affect on the coatings.

Surface Preparation

Previously painted and rusted surfaces, for optimum surface preparation, sandblasting is recommended. However, in situations where sandblasting is not permitted or restricted. MasterSeries can be applied over tightly rusted surfaces, so long as the rust profile is covered by at least 1 mil. It is necessary to remove all oil, grease, loose scale or rust and loose paint using a stiff wire brush, by hand tool cleaning or by other suitable means. This coating will adhere well to light and tightly rusted surfaces and will arrest further rusting.

APPLICATION

MasterSeries may be applied by brush, roller (short nap or foam), or spray (atomizing or airless). These coatings are moisture curing an d it is extremely important that the surface be free of all moisture prior to coating application. Also, the coating should dry for a minimum of one hour at 75°F and 50% R.H. prior to being subjected to moisture (rain); longer at lower temperatures and relative humidity. Caution: for spray application, a fresh air supplied mask should be worn such as #W-292 mfg. by 3M Co. It is important the spray droplets of paint not be inhaled.

IMPORTANT: clean equipment immediately after use. If coating is allowed to harden on equipment, industrial paint stripper is required to remove it. Do not thin for application.

Stir prior to use to assure that no settled pigment remains at bottom of container. Use only low speed mixing and avoid developing a vortex as this will introduce moisture into the system which can cause gelling. Keep lid on container when not in use and store only in dry areas.

All other coatings or alcohol-content solvents must be thoroughly flushed from application equipment prior to application of MasterSeries. Refer to material safety data sheet and package label.

New Metal Surfaces/Clean Steel

Scuff with 220 grit and use Captain Lee’s Metal Prep to ensure maximum adhesion where sandblasting has not been done.

PRECAUTIONS

Contains aromatic polyisocyanate prepolymer. Use adequate ventilation. In confined areas, use adequate forced ventilation during application and drying. When spraying, a fresh air mask such as W-292 manufactured by 3M Co. should be used.

Harmful or fatal if swallowed. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Call physician immediately. Eye irritant. Wear eye protection. In case of contact with eyes, flush repeatedly with water and contact a physician. Difficult to remove from skin. Wear protective clothing. Moisture in skin will cause rapid curing. Do not attempt to remove cured coating on skin with solvent; soak in warm, soapy water. Barrier creams are not recommended where possible to cover with protective clothing. Combustible. Keep away from heat, sparks, and open flame. Refer also to safety data sheet.

Note: Although this coating composition is not a fire retardant product, it will not support combustion and will self-extinguish when the source of fire is removed.

AUTOMOTIVE RESTORATION

MasterSeries Permanent Rust Sealer/Surfacer is recommended as a base primer for any other paint system. It is also used to seal rust and old paints and to level heavy pitting. This base primer is air tight and compatible with any other paint. It will extend the service life of ordinary paints dramatically. MasterSeries Permanent Rust Sealer/Surfacer should be used in any part of the car where recurring rust is a problem. MasterSeries Silver is not generally used on exhaust systems.

MasterSeries Silver Primer will add structural strength to sheet metal that is severely rusted and will fill in pinholes. Multiples coats are usually recommended. For sanding purposes, we recommend 220 grit dry. The use of gloves and protective clothing cannot be overemphasized. This coating once dried is immune from solvent. Wear rubber gloves!

MasterSeries Silver will not rust beyond a scratch or chip. Highly recommended under stainless steel trim clips, backs of bumpers, and anywhere the surface will be scratched during assembly.

FOAM ROLLERS WORK ESPECIALLY WELL FOR FLOOR PANS, FRAMES, AND INNER PANELS.

GAS TANKS INSIDE AND OUT
ACID ETCH THOROUGHLY WITH CAPTAIN LEE’S METAL PREP AND CONDITIONER. THIS WILL DISSOLVE THE RUST AND ETCH THE GALVANIZED SURFACE. DUMP ENTIRE CONTENTS OF CAN INTO THE TANK SENDING UNIT. SLOSH THOROUGHLY. DUMP ENTIRE CONTENTS OUT. STAND TANK UP ON END AND LET DRY FOR 48 HOURS. THIN COAT IS RECOMMENDED. DO NOT ALLOW IT TO PUDDLE UP IN THE TANK. IF TANKS ARE PINHOLED OUT, PAINT THE OUTSIDE OF THE TANK FIRST.

MasterSeries Custom Chassis Coating

 

DESCRIPTION

One part aromatic urethane moisture cured finish for frames and floor pans.

PACKAGING


Pints, quarts, and gallon containers. MasterSeries Custom Chassis Black provides a chassis coating that is very durable, corrosion resistant, and has a high degree of chemical and solvent resistancy and extremely high chip resistancy. MasterSeries Custom Chassis Coating can be brushed on with nylon paint brushes and will not leave brush marks.

USES

MasterSeries Custom Chassis Coating is recommended for frames, firewalls, engine components, trunk compartments, and floor pans inside and out.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Previously painted and rusted surfaces for optimum surface preparation, sandblasting is recommended. Apply two coats MasterSeries silver permanent rust sealer/primer. If sandlbasting cannot be done, scrape/wirebrush all loose paint and heavy rust and apply two coats of MasterSeries silver rust sealer as per container directions and top coat with MasterSeries Chassis Coating. MasterSeries Chassis Coating can be directly applied over tightly adherent rust, but the use of MasterSereies silver primer will extend the service life 20 to 25 years.

SUNLIGHT SENSITIVITY

MasterSeries Custom Chassis Coating (black) is sunlight sensitive. It is not recommended for areas exposed to sunlight such as wheels, bumpers, and outer body. For areas exposed to sunlight, AG 111 is recommended.

APPLICATION

MasterSeries may be applied by brush, roller (short nap) or spray (atomizing or airless). These coatings are moisture curing and it is extremely important that the surface be free of all moisture prior to coating application. Also the coating should dry for a minimum of one hour at 75?F and 50% R.H. prior to being subjected to moisture (rain); longer at lower temperatures and relative humidity.

Custom Chassis Coating should be sitrred for a minimum of 2 full minutes. This ensures that the carbon black pigment will flow out smoothly. If grittiness occurs, continue stirring the container until grittiness is dissolved.

CAUTIONS

DIFFICULT TO REMOVE FROM SKIN. Wear gloves and protective clothing. Moisture in skin will cause rapid curing. The use of gloves cannot be overstated.

COMBUSTIBLE

Keep away from heat, sparks, and open flame. Refer also to Material Safety Data Sheet.

IMPORTANT

Clean equipment immediately after use. If coating is allowed to hardon on equipment, an indusrial paint stripper is required to remove it.

NEW METAL SURFACES

New metal surfaces should be sandblasted for optimum adhesion. This is to provide an anchor pattern and to remove mill scale from hot rolled steel. Where sandblasting cannot be done, the use of an acid based metal prep is recommended. Scuff new metal with 220 grit sandpaper to ensure maximum adhesion.

HEAT TEST

2 coats MasterSeries Chassis Coating applied to rusted panels and subject to 350?F for 15 days. There appear to be no loss of adhesion or blistering of film.

SOLVENT RESISTANCY

After curing for 7 days at room temperature, MasterSeries Chassis coated panels were subject to various solvents and found to be extremely resistant. After 30 days exposure there was no failure or noticable attack by solvents such as xylol, toluol, or other aromatics. Alcohols and glycols showed no attack. APPLY IN THIN COATS. HEAVY COATS WILL RESULT IN BUBBLING.
CLEAN BRUSHES WITH URETHANE REDUCER IF BRUSHMARKS OCCUR.
PERSISTANT BRUSHMARKS: REDUCE BLACK 5% WITH REDUCER.

If engineering and administrative controls of contaminants are not feasible wear a vapor/particulate respirator such as #8711 manufactured by 3M Co. or equivalent during application and until work area has been exhausted of all vapor and spray mist. Individuals with chronic respiratory problems or prior respiratory reactions to isocyanates must not be exposed to vapors or spray mist containing isocyanates. If affected by inhalation of vapor or spray mist, remove to fresh air. If breathing difficulty persists or occurs later, consult a physician and have label information available.

AG 111 High Performance Finishing System





Description:

Two part aliphatic specialty blend urethane.

Colors:

Gloss black, satin black, clear, custom colors upon request.

Packaging:

Sold in pre-measured quarts and gallons for easy blending at the job site. Ratio is 2:1.

MasterSeries AG 111 has non-yellowing, non-chalking properties combines with excellent gloss retention and will retain a high gloss through many years of service. It is suggested, therefore, as a high performance finish in the following areas:

MasterSeries AG 111 can be applied over a wide variety of prepared and primed substrates including structural steel, cold rolled steel, aluminum, concrete, wood, plastics, and galvanized steel. In some cases, it is self-priming but is generally used as a top coat over MasterSeries permanent rust sealer/surfacer/primer.

RATING SYSTEM

90 days immersion is excellent, 60 days is good, 30 days is fair. Tests were run in total immersion.



Surface Preparation

New metal surfaces should be cleaned of oil, grease, and dirt. To obtain optimum results, the metal should be sandblasted and MasterSeries urethane primer applied then topcoated with MasterSeries AG 111 if metal surface is rusted and sadlblasting is not practical from an application or coast standpoint. MasterSeries urethane primer can be applied directly over rust which is tightly adherent. Although this situation is not as ideal as sandblasting, excellent results have been obtained. When painting over previously painted surfaces,a spot test should be made to check for lifting, or incompatibility with the old coating. Scuff old paint with 280 grit before painting. If MasterSeries silver primer has hardened beyond 7 days, scuff with 280 grit to ensure adhesion. It is extremely important that this surface is free of all moisture prior to coating application or blistering of paint film may occur.
